History of Philip R Cousin African Methodist Episcopal Church
The Rev. Barbara A. Ross sent a letter signed by the constituting members and her to Bishop James H. Mayo's Office dated November 6, 1995, requesting his permission to organize a new church in the AME organization. A letter came back dated January 8, 1996, granting the approval of the Bishop to organize a new church in the AME organization. On September 28, 2001, the church was admitted into the 119th Session of the Chicago Annual Conference, the 4th Episcopal District; at St. Mark AME Church, in Milwaukee, WI, under the Presiding Bishop Philip R. Cousin, Sr. Bishop Cousin. It was then that Rev. Barbara A. Ross was appointed the Pastor of Philip R Cousin AME Church. The church is named after the Presiding Bishop Philip R. Cousin, Sr. The Women's Missionary Society is named after the Episcopal Supervisor, Dr. M. Joan Cousin Women's Missionary Society. The Sunday School is named after the late father of Bishop Cousin; the Presiding Elder Sylvester Cousin Sunday School. The first Sunday School was held on Sunday, December 10, 1995 at 11:00 a.m. in the home of Rev. Barbara A. Ross located at 1224 Mackinaw, in Calumet City, IL. It was later moved to 425 Garfield Ave., in Calumet City, IL. It was later moved to 1249A 175th, Hammond, IN, on November 26, 2000. The first Worship Service was held at 1249A 175th, Hammond, IN. On June 3, 2001 it was moved to 1051 Hirsch, Calumet City, IL. On August 25, 2001 it was moved the VFW Post, at 664 Hirsch in Calumet City, IL. Worship Service was held on Sundays at 12:00 pm. The first official Board was held at 11640 S. Lowe in Chicago, IL. On July 12, 2004, very early in the morning, Pastor Rev. Barbara A. Ross had a dream in which God spoke only two words to her, "Naperville, Naperville". Rev. Ross immediately begin to relocate herself and the church to Naperville, IL, where the church met in the Naperville Public Library, located 2035 S. Naper Blvd., in Naperville, IL on Saturdays at 1:30 pm for Bible Study and Saturdays at 3:00 pm for Worship Service. Pastor Ross was led by the Holy Spirit later to relocate the church to downtown Naperville, IL; to the Old Nichols Public Library, the site of Truth Lutheran Church at 110 S. Washington St., Naperville, IL. On January 1, 2005, New Year's Day, the first service was held at that site. Later Pastor Ross was lead by the Holy Spirit to move the Worship Service to Sundays at 3:00 pm. The first Sunday Worship Service was held at the 110 S. Washington St. location on Sunday, July 10, 2005 at 3:00 pm.
